Residents Of 51 Units Remain Displaced Days After Brentwood High-Rise Fire
BRENTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Approximately 150 residents of a Brentwood residential high-rise remain displaced two days after a blaze ripped through an eleventh floor unit.
LAFD spokesman Capt. Jaime Moore told CBS2's Joy Benedict that firefighters Sunday continued to escort the residents of four floors back into their apartments to gather their essentials and toiletries.
A total of 51 units at the 25-story Barrington Plaza on Wilshire Boulevard remain unhoused, Moore said.
"Due to the amount of smoke and fire damage on the 11th floor, that floor has been vacated," the captain said. "Due to the amount of water damage from the firefight and the smoke that went into the hallways, we have vacated floors seven through 10."
The fire erupted just after 11:45 a.m. Friday, injuring a total of ten people, including three firefighters. Of the injured, three people, including a toddler, were said to be in critical condition.
"The big concern is that water as it seeped down floor to floor to floor is it saturates the dry wall. It saturates the plaster in these units and the last thing we want is for a resident to be inside their apartment unit and to have a sheet of dry wall or some plaster down on them," he explained.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
"Our arson investigators have been working with the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives," Moore said. "They haven't ruled anything out so they are looking at everything as a possible cause."
