Report: Vehicle Traffic Down On UCLA Campus

WESTWOOD (AP) — As more UCLA students and employees rely on carpools, bikes and public transportation, vehicle traffic on the campus has dropped to the lowest level since counts were started in 1990.

City News Service reports Sunday that 25 percent of UCLA's 41,000 students drive to the campus alone, with the rest either taking alternate means or living on campus.

Only 53 percent of the school's 26,000 employees drive themselves to Westwood daily, compared to a baseline number of 72 percent of Los Angeles commuters who drive to work every day.

The school generates 102,000 daily vehicle trips, but many of those are van pools or buses.

Vehicle traffic is 20 percent lower now than the peak figure, set in 2003.

The figures were disclosed in an annual UCLA State of the Commute released last week.
