Report: Los Angeles D.A. Opens Cold Case Murder On Heels Of HBO Documentary
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Fourteen years after Susan Berman's Benedict Canyon murder, the New York Times is reporting the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office is reopening its investigation into her death.
The bombshell comes on the heels of new HBO documentary series "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst."
Durst is a New York billionaire who has ties to three different deaths, including Berman, his close friend, shot execution style in her Benedict Canyon home right before Christmas in 2000.
At the time of her death, the Beverly Hills Police Department received an anonymous letter saying there was a cadaver at her house.
In "The Jinx," Berman's step-son shows the camera crew a different letter from Durst to Berman - something he says he just found.
They have block lettering and Beverly Hills is misspelled the same way both times.
Cathy Scott, the author of "Murder in Beverly Hills," about Berman's death, spoke to CBS2/KCAL9 via Facetime from San Diego.
"I mean my jaw dropped. It was an incredible moment, and I visualized detectives having the same reaction when they saw it," Scott said.
Durst told the New York Daily News he has seen "The Jinx" and had "no reaction" to reports about the case being reopened.
A spokesperson for the office of L.A. County D.A. Jackie Lacey declined to comment.
