LOS ANGELES (WWJ) - Ford will unveil the long awaited, all new Mustang on December 5th. This will not be your traditional auto show unveiling.
“Mustang is such an iconic car for us, we want to make sure that it has its own time in the sun,” said Ford Vice President of Marketing Jim Farley.
Farley said they will do a simultaneous launch in New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Shanghai, Sydney and—of course—Ford’s home in Dearborn.
“We’re launching globally,” said Farley. “So, we wanted to have an event that literally spanned the whole globe in that day.”
It’s also the Mustang’s fiftieth anniversary.
Leaked photos show that the new Mustang will likely include some of Ford’s new design language, but will also try to keep some of that unique look.
Competition in the “pony car” segment has been heating up, as Chevrolet recently updated its all new Camaro, and Dodge has seen some success with the return of the Challenger.
The original Mustang was revealed in New York in 1964, leading to speculation that General Motors would use next April’s New York Auto Show for the reveal. Farley says they will have a big Mustang anniversary event at the show. But they wanted to have their own global event, to do the actual reveal.
“This really gives us great control over the circumstance to do this simultaneously in all of these cities around the globe.”
The timing of the reveal means that the first time the new Mustang will be displayed at an auto show will be in Detroit in January.
