Rare 18-Foot Oarfish Found Dead Near Catalina Island

AVALON (CBSLA.com) — A marine science instructor found the carcass of a rare 18-foot fish while snorkeling off the coast of Catalina Island over the weekend.

Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute discovered an oarfish while snorkeling in Toyon Bay on Sunday.

It took 15 people to bring the giant fish, which appears to have died from natural causes, up to the beach.

Oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, so sightings are considered to be rare.
