Well-known artists including Snoop Dogg, T.I. and Chris Brown tweeted messages of mourning.

The party reportedly took place on the outdoor basketball court of a five-bedroom $1.49 million home. An internet flyer advertised it as a "Mansion Pool Party" with professional DJ Kid Red. The flyer said a surprise celebrity guest would be there.

Before the party, Kid Cali tweeted "I'm headed to this pool party wit my blood cuz'n KidRed."

Police say more than 100 people attended the event, but there was no guest list, and detectives said they were having trouble finding witnesses.

Neighbors said women were charged $20 to get in, while men paid $40.

Kid Cali was steadily building a fan following, and was once signed to NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson's record label.
