Rally Held For Teen Fatally Shot By Police In Pasadena
PASADENA (CBS) — Community activists rallied in front of Pasadena City Hall Tuesday evening demanding answers in the officer-involved shooting death of Kendrec McDade.
The rally, which was dubbed "All Out for Kendrec McDade," included McDade's family members, community group members and local residents, totally about 50 individuals.
The demonstrators called for the Pasadena Police Department and city leaders to release information in the McDade shooting case, including police policy on shooting and the 19-year-old's autopsy report.
McDade was shot and killed more than two weeks ago by officers, who believed McDade was armed.
Last week the FBI announced a civil rights inquiry into the case.
Tuesday night McDade's attorney announced that she asked the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Division to step in as well.
McDade's family, who buried him on Saturday, said it had been a rough journey.
"It's hard for us to go out or even drive our car. To even walk down the street. Would I have to be worried about if this is going to happen to me now? So when does it stop, you know? Somebody got to be made to example. Somebody got to be held accountable," said teen's father, Kenneth McDade.
"If we can be in peace with the Lord, we're going to get justice," said Henrietta McDade, the teen's grandmother.
"There is a cover up amongst us and we need to get to the bottom of it. Because until we get to the bottom of it, it's going to keep coming and tomorrow it might be your son," said the family's attorney, Carree Harper.
Pasadena's Police Chief promised transparency in the investigation. But so far details of the investigation are under wraps, as per policy of the department on ongoing investigations.
The McDade family has filed a lawsuit against the city and police department for wrongful death and civil rights violations.
