Public Memorial Held For Fallen San Bernardino Police Officer Bryce Hanes

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — There were hardly any empty seats at the memorial service held for fallen San Bernardino officer Bryce Hanes.

Hanes was killed last week on the job as the result of a drunk driving incident.

Jerry Scott Hanes, the victim's older brother, spoke at the service on Thursday.

"This kind of thing would not be what Bryce would've wanted, being the center of attention, but he would've thought it was pretty cool," Hanes said.

"I remember when Bryce first came home from the hospital [as a baby]. I held him in my arms and told him that if anybody ever called him "Brycey Wisey" I would beat them up. That became my name for him," he added.

Fellow officer Devon Reid reminisced to those in attendance how it would surprise people on the street when Hanes would speak Spanish.

"When Bryce was on patrol dealing with a citizen that did not speak English, it was great to see their reaction when he not only understood them, but also could converse with them perfectly," Reid said.

Attorney General Kamala Harris was at the service, and she shared a hug with Bryce's boss, Chief Jarrod Burguan before he spoke.

"He treated people well with respect and with dignity," Burguan said.

"He was good for our profession and good for our protection," he added.

Top brass from other Inland Empire police departments were also in attendance, like Captain Randy DeAnda of the Rialto Police Department.

"These things are very tragic when they happen, very saddening," DeAnda said.

Officer Bryce Hanes was born in Redlands and will be buried there at the Hillside Memorial Park.

He leaves behind a wife and three children, along with their large extended family.
