Meeting Planned Amid Unrest Over Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities in Los Angeles have scheduled a community meeting for Wednesday night in the wake of two nights of unrest over a fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant.

Police say 22 people were arrested last night, mainly for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly. Officers fired two rounds of non-lethal foam projectiles at demonstrators. Some protesters pelted officers with objects thrown from apartment buildings.

Police Chief Charlie Beck is calling for calm and promises his department will conduct a thorough investigation into Sunday's shooting. A bicycle officer shot and killed a drunken day laborer with a knife.

Critics say the officer didn't have to kill the man. But police say the bicycle officer had little time to respond and wasn't carrying a baton or stun gun.
