Protests In Anaheim Over Deadly Police Shootings To Cost Taxpayers $1.7M
ANAHEIM (CBS) — Anaheim police overtime pay will cost taxpayers about $1.7 million for time spent combating deadly officer-involved shootings in August, according to a report in the LA Times.
Overtime pay in August totaled about three times that accrued in July, the Times reported.
On average, the department spent $540,033 per month in overtime during fiscal 2011-12, police Sgt. Bob Dunn told the newspaper.
The violent demonstrations were staged after police fatally shot two Latino men in July.
The police department's new fiscal year started in July, and overtime earned in August -- 24,291 hours -- ate up about a quarter of the department's allotment for the entire year, Dunn said.
"It's something we will be monitoring," he said, adding that he could not recall another episode in which so many officers to worked overtime.
The Anaheim Police Department's budget is about $115 million per year and has 536 sworn and civilian employees.
