Cybercrime is a booming business for online thieves
o The report calculated the total bill for cybercrime footed by online adults globally as $388 billion over the past year, which is larger than the illegal trade in marijuana, cocaine and heroin.
Cybercrime is widespread and can be costly and time-consuming to resolve
o The research revealed there are more than 1 million victims of cybercrime a day – twice as many as the amount of new born babies. This amounts to 14 victims a second
o 73 percent of adults surveyed in the U.S. have experienced cybercrime of their lifetime, which is more than the global average of 69 percent.
o In the U.S., the average victim lost 10 days to resolve an instance of cybercrime.
Millennial males are most at risk for cybercrime
o Men tend to spend more time on the Internet than females and also tend to visit adult content and gambling sites, which put them at greater risk.
o Millenials, defined as adults between the ages of 18 and 31 also spend a lot of time online, increasing their risk for cybercrime. On average, millenials spend an average of 28 hours per week on the Internet– more than a full day!
Increase of the overall use of mobile devices and mobile threats
o 10% of adults online have experienced cybercrime on their mobile device.
o 44% of mobile phone users globally use their mobile phone to access the Internet
Disconnect between the likelihood of becoming a victim of real world crime vs. cybercrime
o 7 in 10 people thought they'd be more likely to become a victim of a physical crime than cybercrime.
o Yet three times as many respondents were victims of cybercrime rather than real world crime.
