President Obama To Announce Osama Bin Laden Is Dead

WASHINGTON (CBS)— He was the most wanted man in the world for nearly ten years.

But tonight, President Barack Obama announced to a surprised nation that Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind and financier of the 9-11 attacks, was killed and his body is in US custody.

Bin Laden was reportedly killed several days ago but the US waiting on making the announcement until a DNA match could be confirmed, say sources to CBS.

For nearly a decade, and after President Bush vowed to bring in the fugitive — dead or alive — Bin Laden avoided capture in the mountains of, first Afghanistan and then Pakistan.

It is rumored Bin Laden that Bin Laden was shot in the head. What role the recent drone attacks in Pakistan had to do with finding Bin Laden is unclear.

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan said government sources said the feds "never gave up the hunt for Bin Laden. This effort has been going on for many many years. And the people responsible for finding Bin Laden will probably never be known."

She also added that killing Osama does not mean that Al-Qaeda is completely destroyed by "definitely weakened."

David Martin, CBS Pentagon correspondent, said time probably allowed Bin Laden to feel complacent and believe the US might have been off his trail.

White House correspondent Chip Reid reports, "To say the White House is overjoyed tonight is a major understatement."
