President Obama Sings Al Green Song At Apollo Theater Event

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Maybe he got caught up with being on stage at the Apollo, but when President Obama decided to sing a few lines of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" during a fundraising event, he set the web on fire.

"Obama sings Al Green" is the most searched term on Google as of 1 p.m., while and "Al Green" are trending on Twitter in Los Angeles.

The president didn't belt out the whole song, but did impress the crowd with what he decided to croon.

"I….so in love with you…." Obama sang, before grinning at the crowd and saying that "those guys" backstage said he wasn't going to do it. "Don't worry, Rev, I can't sing like you, I just wanted to show my appreciation."

Most presidents generally maintain a serious presence, even when campaigning requires, say, kissing babies or eating ice cream at a local soda shop, so few presidents have been captured on video singing. That's due partly to the air of gravitas they have to maintain, but also because the news cycle was not 24/7 as it is now.

But that's where YouTube comes in handy.

For example, check out this video of President Bill Clinton singing John Lennon's "Imagine" with Israeli teen pop star, Liel. Clinton lets his voice loose at about the 2:27 mark.

President Ronald Reagan, who was an actor before he got into politics, may have most pre-presidential presence among many of his contemporaries, thanks to his film career. But even he wasn't one to sing loud and proud – in 1991, Reagan is seen on video singing along with the Eureka College Troubador Singing Group, but you can't hear him.
