Powerful Wind Gusts Topple Trees In Parts Across SoCal

PORTER RANCH (CBSLA.com) — High winds toppled several trees across the Southland, including one in the San Fernando Valley.

About 11 p.m. Friday, a 50-foot tree came down in Porter Ranch, landing atop a vehicle on Yolanda Avenue and blocking several driveways. Another tree fell in the Northridge area overnight.

But the gusty winds also impacted canopies sheltering some who were camping outside a Best Buy retail store ahead of Black Friday.

"Brutal. Really brutal. Our canopy like literally just like flew away," one camper said. "We're kind of just making do with what we have."

Meanwhile, the cold front also brought blistering temperatures and rain to parts of the Southland.

"It's crazy. What a difference a few weeks makes. This is unbelievable," Harriet Kaplan, a Granada Hills resident, said.

A high wind warning -- categorized by winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour and gusts of up to 60 miles per hour -- will remain in effect until noon Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, strong offshore winds are expected across Ventura and Los Angeles counties through midday.

Wind warnings are also in effect for the 5 Freeway at the Grapevine and the 210/118 freeway junction, as well as, for the 118 Freeway in Simi Valley.

The unseasonably cooler temperatures are expected to remain through the weekend. A warming trend is expected by Monday.
