Powerball Jackpot Reaches Record $600M
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The jackpot for Saturday's Powerball draw is at $600 million, a record for that game.
Lottery officials say the number could climb even higher.
KCAL9's Rob Schmitt reported from Blue Bird Liquors in Hawthorne, a "packed" store that has sold many winning lottery tickets in the past.
He said there were more than 100 people on line and the line was going out the store and down the block.
Schmitt said he spoke to one woman who missed her dialysis appointment to buy her tickets.
Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Powerball starts at $40 million. The previous record jackpot reached $588 million in November 2012.
The record jackpot of all US-based lottery games, for now, is the $656 Mega Millions jackpot reached in March 2012.
The current Mega Millions jackpot (drawing is Friday evening) is at $190 million.
[UPDATE: Two tickets matched all six numbers in Friday's draw. The winner Mega Millions numbers are 11, 15, 35, 43, 49 and the Mega number is 41. The winners were sold in New Jersey and Virginia. California had no 5/5 winners.)
