Power Surge At LAX Leaves Passengers Stuck, Multiple Flights Canceled, Delayed
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - Travelers were temporarily stuck on airplanes at Los Angeles International Airport after a power surge caused for equipment to be rebooted Wednesday.
According to an LAX spokesperson, the power surge occurred around 6:10 p.m. Generators reportedly came on immediately and the equipment that went out was in the process of being rebooted.
Once the equipment is rebooted, the seven flights affected will be reportedly be purged.
LAX Public Information Officer Olga Gallardo said power has been restored to most of the airport with the exception of terminals 1, 7 and 8, which were operating on emergency power. (Affecting mostly Southwest and United Flights.)
She said it was a good idea to call airlines ahead of traveling to the airport to find out if a flight is delayed or canceled.
As of 9:25 p.m. Southwest Airlines had announced the cancellation all 18 outbound flights from the airport.
United Airlines announced they would be extending the delay of at least 11 flights taking off from LAX until 5 a.m. and had diverted seven incoming flights to San Francisco, San Diego, and Denver Airports.
A ground stop was put in place for incoming flights until 11 p.m. Wednesday night.
As of 10:05 p.m., power had been restored in all terminals.
The cause of the outage is being investigated.
