Possible DUI Suspect Leads Police On High-Speed Chase On Northbound 5 Freeway

LAKE FOREST (CBSLA.com) — A possible DUI suspect led California Highway Patrol Tuesday night on a high-speed pursuit along the 5 Freeway.

The chase began around 10 p.m. in Lake Forest, according to CHP.

Traffic was light on the northbound 5 Freeway as the suspect drove his black Nissan Maxima through Downey, Commerce and Lincoln Heights, often in speeds in excess of 65 mph.

By 10:30 p.m., the suspect made it to up to Glendale and showed no signs of stopping until he hit some traffic in Burbank.

Traffic began to dissolve in Sun Valley and the suspect used the opportunity to pick up speed. For some reason the driver turned off his headlights.

As of 11 p.m., the chase had moved up the 5 to Santa Clarita and the driver turned the headlights back on.

When the suspect was passing through the Grapevine, around 11:10 p.m., he drove over a spike strip and the vehicle sustained a flat tire.

He stopped the Nissan in the No. 2 lane of the freeway, lit only by the CHP patrol cars surrounding the vehicle.

Meanwhile, CHP held off traffic as officers approached the Nissan and took the man into custody.

Officers checked the vehicle for any weapons and then reopened all northbound lanes to traffic.

No word yet why officers originally stopped the vehicle. Officials have not yet identified the suspect.
