Portions Of Interstate 215 In San Bernardino To Be Closed All Weekend For 'Big Shift'
SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — A large section of the northbound Interstate 215 in San Bernardino will be shut down this weekend, cutting off easy access to Las Vegas and Big Bear.
The project, which began in 2007, is a $723 million widening project dubbed "The Big Shift." The freeway will be widened from six to 10 lanes by adding a general use and carpool lane in each direction between Interstate 10 and State Route 210.
The closure begins at 11 a.m. Friday and is scheduled to end at 6 a.m. Monday, and will occur in stages between 2nd Street and Highland Avenue.
The I-215's southbound lanes will remain open.
Anyone on their way to Las Vegas, the San Bernardino Mountains, the high desert or the Highlands area this weekend should look for an alternative route. Caltrans use highway signs throughout Southern California to warn drivers of the closure.
