Port Of Long Beach To Debut Electric Power Stations In Pollution Fight
LONG BEACH (CBS) — Cargo ships arriving at the port complex in Long Beach are about to go electric.
Officials at the Port Of Long Beach are set to dedicate new on-board generator system on Monday designed to ease the port's pollution problem.
Most cargo ships use traditional on-board diesel systems for their power -- which is the source of most of the pollution they spew into the air.
But a new "shore power" system looks to allow cargo ships to make the transition to "special electrical power stations" at the docks.
Engineers and environmentalists expect the switch to reduce the amount of emissions cargo ships produce while in the port area.
