Police Use Victim's Cell Phone To Track Down Suspected Rapist
INGLEWOOD (CBS) — Police were able to track down a man suspected of raping a woman by tracing the victim's cell phone.
"The more that we can take advantage of technology that's available to us the more we can solve cases and locate suspects in order to serve the community better," said Lt. Dan Kim, of the El Segundo Police Department.
Charles Lee Kelly, 30, was arrested by El Segundo detectives Monday night dressed in his security uniform, according to Kim.
Kelly reportedly offered a 20-year-old woman a ride at Imperial Highway and Prairie Avenue in Inglewood, Kim said.
The victim told police that Kelly drove her to an empty, dark parking lot and raped her at knifepoint.
Kim said the victim managed to escape the car but left her clothing and cell phone behind.
Police traced the device's signal and frequency to the suspect's home.
