Police: Suspect Used Fake Explosive Device In West Covina Bank Robbery
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police on Friday asked the public to help find a man suspected of robbing a West Covina bank while clutching an envelope he claimed to be an explosive device.
The robbery took place around 5 p.m. on Tuesday at a Bank of America branch on Eastland Center Drive, according to West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez.
The suspect "presented a note to a teller demanding money and that he had a bomb" and then fled the bank with an unknown amount of cash, said Lopez.
Employees noticed a bulky manila envelope with wires protruding from it was left behind on a counter near the teller window.
After a Los Angeles County bomb squad was notified and the surrounding area cordoned off, the package was determined to be harmless.
Police said the suspect is described as a white male, aged 30 to 35 years old, 160 to 180 pounds and between 5'10" and 6' tall.
