Sheriff's Standoff In Norwalk Ends After More Than 6 Hours
NORWALK (CBSLA.com) — A sheriff's standoff with an armed subject in Norwalk that prompted the evacuation of approximately 30 homes ended late Tuesday night after more than six hours.
The U.S. Marshals Service, Pomona Police Department and the Department of Corrections were serving a warrant in the 12000 block of Rosecrans Avenue just after 4 p.m. when the suspect pointed a rifle at approaching officers and barricaded himself inside a mobile home, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities say the suspect, a 38 year-old male, is on federal probation for bank robbery and was wanted for multiple armed robberies.
A LASD spokesperson said the suspect was seen wearing a bulletproof vest and was with another male adult inside the home. The standoff came to an end at 10:55 p.m. when the suspect surrendered to authorities after tear gas was thrown inside, according to a department spokesperson.
LASD's Special Enforcement Bureau and Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT and K-9 units assisted on the scene.
Approximately 30 surrounding residences were evacuated and relocated to Thomas B. Moffitt Elementary School, located at 13323 Goller Avenue, according to the department. Rosecrans Avenue and the exit ramp off of the 5 Freeway were both shut down.
