Barricaded suspect critically wounded after being shot by police in Sylmar
A man was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by police during a barricade situation in Sylmar on Saturday.
The lengthy standoff lasted about six hours at an apartment building in the 14100 block of Foothill Boulevard, before coming to a sudden end at around 8:35 p.m., when the shooting occurred, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers were first called to the scene for reports of a "violent male with mental illness," the statement said.
They arrived to find the man barricaded inside of one of the apartments, allegedly armed with a knife.
A perimeter was established in the surrounding area and a SWAT team was called to the scene for attempts to negotiate with the man.
At around 8 p.m., police say that the man exited the building and made his way to a courtyard, still armed with what they called a large kitchen knife.
Shortly afterwards, he was shot by police and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
His identity has not yet been released and exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear.
