Police Search For Driver In Connection With Fatal Hit-And-Run Near USC
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday were searching for the driver responsible for killing a 58-year-old man in a hit-and-run near the University of Southern California.
Elias Aceves was struck around 9:10 p.m. Tuesday while walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of W. 23rd and Portland streets in the University Park neighborhood, officials said.
Aceves was reportedly walking home after purchasing a lottery ticket at a liquor store about a block away, which he did daily.
He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
Nearby security cameras at USC caught the incident on video. Police said the suspect vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
"With the pedestrian flying and hitting the ground at so many feet from the impact, and then we have a left shoe and a right shoe – one went over the property of a house right here and the other one went northbound in the street so he was really going fast," Officer Joseph Cha said.
Neighbors say speeding has been a problem in the area.
"It's terrible," John Conte said. "People are flying nonstop. It's terrible down here."
"As soon as they get off the freeway, they still think they're on the freeway," Victor Sanchez explained.
The suspect vehicle was described as an older model black Mercedes sedan that may have substantial damage to the front-end and the windshield.
