Hoax Video Of Gun Prompts Police Response To Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA) – A suspicious video of a gun posted to social media - which prompted a police callout to Cal State University, Northridge Friday afternoon - turned out to be a hoax, officials said.

Around 12:30 p.m., Los Angeles police responded to the 18100 block of Nordhoff Street on a report of a video of a possible person with a gun on campus.

According to The Sundial, CSUN's campus newspaper, the video was posted to Snapchat.

"CSUN officials are aware of a social media post of a video that appears to show a gun on campus," the school wrote on its Twitter account. "Campus Police are investigating the situation. Information will be shared with the campus community when available."

The campus was never evacuated during the incident, and it remained open.

"We can confirm no evidence of a man with a gun or any crime," LAPD tweeted.

At 1:44 p.m., the school confirmed that the video was a hoax and there was no threat to the campus.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked call the CSUN Department of Police Services at 818-677-2111.
