Police Release 911 Audio From 91 Freeway Shooting Victim
FULLERTON (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday released a portion of the 911 audio detailing the victim's account of the 91 Freeway shooting that occurred earlier this week.
KCAL9's Stacey Butler sat down with shooting victim, Ken Baker, as he listened to the phone call for the first time since the shooting occurred.
"I knew I'd been shot and I didn't want to let him get away because I'd probably never see him again," Baker said. "For some reason, I wasn't in fear of my life."
Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a car-to-car shooting at the junction of the I-5 and 91 freeways after a phone call that they received from Baker, officials said.
According to police, Baker followed the suspect's vehicle eastbound on the 91 freeway while talking on the phone with 911 operators.
"Yeah, I just got shot at eastbound 91 at Harbor Boulevard; I just got shot at," Baker said in the 911 audiotape. "Yes, I'm hit, they took out my window, and I think my arm is shot."
Police said Baker suffered three gunshot wounds to his left arm, one of which entered his chest through his ribcage.
Officers were able to detain 32-year-old Jerry Valentin of Scottsdale, Ariz., at the scene and took him into custody Monday, authorities said.
According to the Fullerton Police Department, Valentin was arraigned in Santa Ana on Wednesday morning where he plead not guilty and was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting in an occupied vehicle and carrying a concealed firearm within a vehicle.
Valentin is being held on $1 million at the Orange County Jail and will face 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted, authorities said.
