Police Chase Ends With Double Homicide Suspect Shot Dead In NoHo
NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — A police chase ended with a deadly shooting in North Hollywood Thursday afternoon, authorities reported.
Officers said a suspect was wanted for allegedly shooting and killing two men at Tujunga Avenue and Valerio Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill station.
The suspect fled when officers tried to initiate a traffic stop and drove onto the northbound 170 Freeway. The chase lasted about ten minutes, according to Edward Lawrence reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9.
The driver stopped on the freeway's Burbank Avenue off-ramp and exited the vehicle when officers shot him.
The driver was transported to the hospital and was later reported dead.
Police say the suspect killed two men at Tujunga and Valerio. LAPD officers said the suspect they shot fired upon them first.
Jake Poe, a witness, heard the shooting occur. "All of a sudden we heard the shots ring out. Then my son and I started walking up here, and we heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop and we ducked."
Police tell Lawrence that the original shooter got into a dispute with three people at the apartment complex he managed. The fight escalated with the gunman shooting two tenants and shooting at a third. The two deceased are reportedly a father and son, according to a witness.
Noe Rojero witnessed the fight. "It started inside the apartment. And then they came out."
The third man was not hit and is talking to police, reported Lawrence.
All three men were in the building working on the plumbing.
Rojero says police arrived and told the alleged shooter to stop. "But he got in his car, he didn't listen -- he put it in reverse and he ran away."
Witness Jacquline Bullock witnessed the police shooting. "They had their guns drawn. And there was a lot of yelling. And I saw him rise up and then I heard gunfire."
Lawrence also reported the gun in the murder of the father and son has been recovered.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
