Police Pursuit Culminates In Tense Standoff With Armed Suspect At Carson Home
CARSON (CBSLA.com) — A police pursuit Monday afternoon culminated in a tense, hours-long standoff with an armed suspect at a Carson home.
Authorities said the 10-minute chase began at Vernon and Grand avenues in South Los Angeles around 2:40 p.m. when they tried to pull over a man for reckless driving.
The suspect led police to a neighborhood near Grace Avenue and East Desford Street in Carson, where he crashed his vehicle into a home and then ran next door to his girlfriend's residence.
The girlfriend later came out of the house with a baby before she was taken into custody for questioning.
"She's come out and explained to us that there are no guns or weapons in the house. He is in the house. We have the house surrounded by police officers. We are working to affect an arrest," an officer told CBS2's Louisa Hodge.
When authorities attempted to go inside the home, however, they immediately retreated when they realized the suspect had a handgun.
Police called in a K-9 unit and crisis negotiators to help with the capture.
Around 10:30 p.m., SWAT officers fired tear gas into the home. The suspect remained inside as of 11:50 p.m.
The man has an extensive criminal history, which includes multiple robberies, carjacking and narcotics.
Residents were forced out of their houses for precautionary measures during the incident.
A shelter was later set up at Carson Community Center for those displaced.
