Police Pursuit On PCH Ends Peacefully Near Point Mugu
MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — Police on Monday took a driver into custody after he led them on a pursuit along Pacific Coast Highway from Ventura County as far south as Pacific Palisades and then northward to Point Mugu.
Sky9's Derek Bell reported that officers first attempted to stop the suspect in Ventura County on a speeding violation. The suspect, who was driving a white SUV, refused to pull over and began leading a pursuit south. The vehicle reached a top speed of 91 mph on an evening when traffic was surprisingly light at the 6 p.m. hour on the heavily traveled coastal road.
Still, congestion caused the driver to come to a brief stop near Temescal Canyon Road in Pacific Palisades. He then made a U-turn and began heading north.
When the vehicle reached the Point Mugu area in southern Ventura County, officers deployed a spike strip, which flattened the vehicle's tires and ultimately forced the driver to stop. He exited the vehicle, complied with officers' demands that he lie on the ground, and was taken in to custody.
City News Service reported the chase began at 5:32 p.m. in Camarillo and ended about 6:45 p.m. near the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station.
