Police Pursue Erratic Suspect They Say Was High In Highland
HIGHLAND (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday chased a wild, erratic driver who at one point drove the wrong-way on the 210 Freeway.
The chase started in Glendora about 7:20 p.m. as a possible DUI.
Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9 said, the suspect often went 100 mph -- without headlights -- and was driving with no regard to his safety.
Anchor Sharon Tay said, "it looked like this guy has a death wish."
The suspect left the freeway and went on surface streets in the Rialto area. "He just blew through a red light," reported Mundel. "He's making some very scary moves!"
After about five minutes on surface streets, four police cars boxed the suspect in at an ARCO gas station.
The chase ended with the suspect being dragged out of his vehicle.
At times during the one-hour chase it appeared the suspect "was taunting officers," reported Mundel.
Amanda Burden, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said the driver had several near-misses while driving erratically for most of the hour. "At one point he swerved like mad. Passed cars and people. He just missed a police cruiser."
The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody.
Late Friday, investigators related to Burden that they believed the unidentified suspect was high on drugs.
"Amazingly," reported Burden, "no one got hurt."
