Driver Of Stolen Van Strikes Police Car, Several Vehicles In South LA
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The driver of a stolen van Tuesday struck several vehicles — including police patrol cars — during a wild high-speed chase through South Los Angeles.
The driver hit a police patrol car head-on at 50th and Broadway, Gil Leyvas reported from overhead in Sky9. Officials later confirmed that several police vehicles were struck.
The driver, who will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, also broadsided an SUV at New England and Washington. He then continued to strike other vehicles in the Exposition Park area, hitting at least a dozen vehicles in all.
The chase along the 110 and 10 freeways, as well as surface streets, began just after 1 p.m. at Manchester and the 110 Freeway.
At 1:50 p.m., a woman ran toward the van from a house, which the driver appeared to be circling.
He then got out of the vehicle at Vermont and 43rd Street and ran through the street with a satchel, until he fell. Police were then able to apprehend him.
At one point, the suspect drove the wrong way along Figueroa near the USC campus.
