Police: Near-Drowning Of 9/11 Victim's Mom Not Suicide Attempt
SANTA ANA (CBS) — A woman who lost her daughter in the Sept. 11 attacks on New York City was hospitalized on Monday while recovering from a near-drowning in her ex-husband's pool, a sheriff's spokesman said.
"There's nothing to indicate" Melanie Frost — whose daughter Lisa was aboard United Flight 175 that slammed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001 — was trying to commit suicide, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.
Frost was visiting her ex-husband Thomas on Sunday when she got in his backyard pool in the 100 block of Via Adelfa.
Thomas left the house for awhile and said he found his ex-wife at the bottom of the pool when he returned about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Amormino said.
Thomas retrieved Frost out of the pool and tried to revive her, the spokesman said.
Melanie, who lives in Laguna Woods, was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where she was placed on a ventilator, Amormino said.
Sheriff's deputies were investigating the near-drowning as an accident, Amormino said.
"There's nothing to indicate it was suicide," he said.
The Frosts' 22-year-old daughter had just graduated first in her class at Boston University and was flying back to Orange County to visit her parents when she was killed in the 9/11 attacks.
Lisa Frost, who was planning to move to San Francisco to start a new job, was on the second plane that crashed into the World Trade Center towers.
