Police Issue Shark Advisory In Huntington Beach
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday warned the public of several great white sharks that have been spotted off the coast of Sunset Beach and Seal Beach.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, the sharks were seen over the past week swimming as far south as Warner Avenue.
On May 14, Orange County Sheriff's deputies released footage of a close encounter with a school of sharks in the area.
Deputies said at least six sharks swam around a fire department boat, approximately 5 to 6 feet in length.
In April, CBS2/KCAL9 chopper also spotted several sharks in the same area.
Lifeguards have posted shark advisory signs along the entire surf line of Sunset Beach, and the northern section of Bolsa Chica State Beach.
Huntington Beach lifeguards and HB1 will be working with a Cal State University, Long Beach marine biology professor to tag and track the sharks patterns today.
Officials said the recent sightings are not unusual. The sharks tend to feed on stingrays, and have not presented a threat to humans.
At this time, there are no warnings to stay out of the water, however, authorities advised the public not to provoke or interfere with the sharks.
The advisory will remain in effect until Tuesday, police said.
