Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a handgun at them as they were responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call in North Hollywood-- and where they found a person dead inside a vehicle.

Officers were called to Victory Boulevard near Laurel Canyon Boulevard around 4:50 a.m. on Monday. According to LAPD Detective Meghan Aquilar, when officers arrived a suspect pointed a gun at them while they were still in their vehicle.

"They exited their vehicle and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Aguilar said. The man then ran away, and officers called for backup.

As more officers arrived, they found the same armed suspect in a nearby parking structure, "where another officer-involved shooting occurred," Aguilar said.

The suspect then ran back into the parking structure, and a third shooting between the suspect and police occurred, involving "numerous officers." The suspect was shot and died at the scene. LAPD says officers found a handgun at the scene.

Aguilar said that after the shootings, police found a man dead from a gunshot wound inside a parked car nearby. Police are still investigating the relationship, if any, between the shooting suspect and the victim in the car and a motive.

The 170 Freeway just before Sherman Way was briefly shut down during the initial investigation. Police continued their investigation through the morning and the following streets in the area remain closed: Victory Boulevard from Laurel Canyon to the 170 Freeway is closed, as well as Hamlin Street from Saint Claire Avenue, all the way back to Laurel Canyon.
