Police Investigate Deadly Hit-And-Run Accident In Newton
NEWTON (CBSLA.com) — Police Monday investigated a fatal hit-and-run traffic collision that occurred in the Newton area.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, a 22-year-old male bicyclist was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Slauson Avenue and San Pedro Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
A preliminary investigation revealed Manuel Enrique Mendoza-Hernandez, of Los Angeles, rode his bicycle off the south sidewalk of Slauson Avenue, just east of San Pedro Place, and into the path of a vehicle that was attempting to make a right-hand turn.
Mendoza-Hernandez was knocked to the pavement, and was subsequently run over by the vehicle, authorities said.
Paramedics from the Los Angeles City Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said the driver of the vehicle fled from eastbound on Slauson Avenue from the scene.
Evidence recovered revealed the hit-and-run vehicle may possibly be a Toyota Corolla, however, the year and color remain unknown.
Officers explained there were no witnesses to the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
