Police In Standoff With Female Motorist In Laguna Beach After Pursuit

LAGUNA BEACH (CBS) —  A female motorist led Newport Beach police on a low-speed pursuit Friday evening to Laguna Beach, where a standoff continued for several hours.

Newport Beach police tried to stop the motorist for a vehicle code violation at about 6:43 p.m. at Crystal Heights Drive and West Coast Highway, Newport Beach police Sgt. Chuck Freeman said.

The motorist drove into Laguna Beach and stopped on Pacific Coast Highway between Pearl and Diamond streets.

She was reportedly impaired and police believe there is a gun or some other weapon inside the vehicle, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Keith Krallman.

PCH remains shutdown in the area while police try to talk the motorist into giving up.

"She's been there since 7 p.m.," Freeman said. "We're waiting for her to open the door and come out."

The suspect vehicle appears to be a white sport utility vehicle and it is described as a Ford, Freeman said.

At one point, the suspect exited the vehicle and looked like she was about to foot bail but she returned to the SUV moments later.
