Police Hunt Suspect Who Fatally Shot South LA Mother Of 3
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities are on the hunt for a suspect who fatally shot a 28-year-old South Los Angeles mother Tuesday night.
A man was also wounded during the shooting, according to police.
The woman's 2-year-old daughter was in a car just a few feet away on South Hobart Boulevard when the shooting started just before 10 p.m. The woman's daughter was unhurt.
CBS2's Bobby Kaple spoke to witnesses.
"I heard a series of shots fired. Sounded like over 20 rounds," said Myra Green, who found the victim laying in the street bleeding.
"I ran up to her. I placed my jacket on her and took her by the hand. She didn't say anything," said Green.
Family members Wednesday identified the dead woman as Yolanda Major, a nurse and mother, who lived in Hawthorne.
The Sheriff's department said another man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The extent of his condition was not known.
Kaple reported that Major's family is in understandable disbelief.
"She was just getting off work because she had done a double shift," said Major's aunt Diane Gray. "She was in the nursing profession. She was just going home. That's really devastating ... I pray to God they find out who did this to her and justice shall be served."
Carolyn Brewer, the victim's cousin, added, "It's just really sad and really wrong. She is not a person that would be a target or in a gang or anything like that. To hear that and have to go through this is very hurtful."
Brewer remembers her cousin as "a fun loving person. She was very inspiring and dedicated. She was a great mother taken away from her beautiful children and family."
In addition to her daughter, Major also has two sons, aged 9 and 7.
Police told Kaple the shooting was possibly gang-related and they believe the shooter fled in a white Dodge station wagon.
