Police Hunt Suspect In Brother-In-Law's Slaying

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Police are on the hunt for a man they say shot and killed his brother-in-law Wednesday afternoon in San Bernardino.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Jeff Nguyen stood outside the crime scene where he said the victim ended up dying "in front of his own door."

Authorities say Rafael Flores, 27, and his sister were fighting at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of North Mountain View just before 2 p.m.

She called her husband to say come home. Officials say when the husband arrived he was ambushed.

The shooting startled neighbors.  Ruby Logan said, "I heard screaming and we didn't know what it was."

Beatrice Vargas said, "I was coming home from school with my daughter and we had just gone in a few seconds. I close my door and we hear fireworks. Booming sound."

It wasn't fireworks but gunshots that alerted the neighborhood.

Nguyen talked to the victim's wife – she didn't want to go on camera. She told Nguyen her husband's name was Adan Ruiz, 26.

Vargas was next door when shots went off. "All of a sudden I hear helicopters. I hear an ambulance, police cars. I come outside and I see all this commotion.

Police say Flores shot Ruiz several times in the chest and then fled.

Earlier, investigators sent a police dog through an abandoned home to see if someone was hiding inside.

They came up empty-handed.
