Stolen Truck Suspect Slams Into Another Vehicle Killing Innocent Driver
POMONA (CBSLA.com) — An innocent driver was killed during a police chase Sunday evening in Pomona.
Offcials tell Carter Evans, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, that an innocent driver was killed when the driver they were chasing -- in a stolen truck -- slammed into another vehicle at about 5:40 p.m.
The accident occurred at Towne Avenue and La Verne Street in Pomona.
The chase started in Claremont when officers identified the truck as stolen. A brief chase ensued.
Officials said the suspect in the stolen truck ran a red light and broadsided the victim.
The dead man was in the car alone.
Police did not release the suspect or victim's names.
Evans spoke to the owner of the stolen truck who came to the scene. She said she heard the engine revving in her garage about 4:30 this morning.
Kimberly McWilliam said, "Stealing it is one thing. But when you kill someone? What is so important about that truck that you had to have it that bad? I don't get it. And every time I think of that man being killed ... I'm going to start crying again. I feel so bad."
The suspect took off running after the crash.
Police caught up to him, according to Evans. The suspect is in the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Streets were closed for more than five hours as they investigated the accident.
