Police Catch Man, 67, Who Allegedly Dumped Dirty Adult Diapers In OC
LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Laguna Beach police said they finally caught a mysterious litter bug who has been dumping dozens of dirty adult diapers along the Pacific Coast Highway in Orange County for months.
A 67-year-old retiree from Crystal Cove is the prime suspect, according to Capt. Jason Kravetz.
On Monday, detectives discovered a bag of used adult diapers where the waste has frequently been found.
This time, there was an envelope attached to one of them.
"It had a mailing address to Fullerton on it…(police) found out that it was a medical office and one of the employees of that office lived locally in Newport Coast," said Kravetz.
Authorities Tuesday began to stake out a home in the exclusive Crystal Cove development above the PCH, which belonged to the 67-year-old man.
Around 10:45 p.m., cops followed the retiree as he exited his driveway in a Lexus.
The man was pulled over after he made a U-turn and that's when cops found his passenger seat filled with soiled diapers.
"He provided a story to (police)… I can't go into detail as to what that story was… but he gave reasons why he had been (dumping the diapers) for a number of months," said Kravetz.
Kravetz said he doesn't know why the retiree didn't throw the diapers away in his own trash can or hire a diaper service to retrieve them from the home.
Officers said they couldn't arrest the man because they didn't actually catch him throwing the diapers on the road.
They also said the crime of illegal dumping is a misdemeanor.
Police want the 67-year-old to be prosecuted by the District Attorney.
