Police: 110 Freeway Shooting May Have Been Road Rage Or Racing Incident

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man driving on the Harbor (110) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles was shot in the back Friday as a result of either a road rage or racing incident, police said.

The shooting happened at about 1:10 a.m. on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway just south of the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said. The shooting is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

"There was either some kind of road rage incident or highway racing going on," said Sgt. M. Glenn, the watch commander at the LAPD's Rampart Division. "Two shots were fired and one of them hit the victim in the back."

After the shooting, the victim managed to get on to the westbound 10 and exit at Normandie Avenue. He pulled into a gas station at 20th Street and Normandie and called 911. LAPD and CHP units responded to the scene.

The shooter's vehicle was described only as a Volkswagen car. CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said the first report was that the car was blue, but that is not confirmed.

The northbound Harbor Freeway was temporarily shut down at Ninth Street so police could conduct a sweep of that part of the freeway for evidence.
