Plan To Bring USS Iowa To Los Angeles Steams Ahead
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A bid to bring an historic World War II battleship to the Port of Los Angeles is steaming ahead.
Port officials on Thursday announced that they'd like the USS Iowa to be relocated to the port's Main Channel in San Pedro as a floating museum.
The Daily Breeze of Torrance says port officials will vote on the choice of location later and must apply to the Navy to have the ship donated by Nov. 24.
The nonprofit group Pacific Battleship Center is proposing to cover relocation and restoration costs.
The Iowa is the last surviving World War II battleship without a home. It spans the length of three football fields and once carried President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic for meetings with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
