Placentia Skateboarder, 14, Killed In Alleged DUI Crash

PLACENTIA (CBSLA.com) — A 14-year-old skateboarder was killed Friday evening by an alleged drunk driver.

Placentia police originally said the motorist accidentally struck the teen and was not arrested. They have since changed the narrative of what happened to the boy on Friday night about 8:50 p.m.

They said they told the original story as to not compromise their investigation. The driver was, in fact, cited and arrested for driving under the influence.

The unidentified teen was hit on Rose Drive, just north of Castner Drive.  The driver's name was also withheld, again out of detectives' concerns that the case could be contaminated, Sgt. Tom Valentine said.

The department first said the boy had been riding on the skateboard when the car struck him. Today, the coroner's office clarified that the teen was retrieving his skateboard from the street when the crash occurred.

The teen was pronounced dead at an area hospital 9:40 a.m. Saturday, said Supervising Deputy Coroner Larry Esslinger. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
