Tickled Pink! Thousands Race For The Cure To Fight Breast Cancer

-->

ELYSIAN PARK (CBS) — Nearly 15,000 participants took part in the 16th annual Susan G. Komen L.A. County Race for the Cure.

The 5K race got under way at 9 a.m. for runners. Walkers began at 9:10 a.m.

No matter how they started, or when, an enthusiastic time was had by all -- many clad in the pink that has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness.

Louisa Hodge, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, spoke with organizers who say the course this year was taken out of the Dodger Stadium parking lot and into Elysian Park, allowing for more scenery and greenery.

A co-chair for the event says 75 percent of the money raised Saturday will stay in Los Angeles County.

"It allows us to grant services -- diagnostic services, education, screening -- to people here in LA County that need it," she said.

Hodge also spoke with breast cancer survivor Bertha Holt, who was diagnosed in 2008.

"I've taken up the fight of being an activist for breast cancer. So I'm affiliated with Susan Komen and Dr. Susan Love and just the whole 9 yards of helping, putting the word out to spread through out communities for young women to go off and get their mammograms," Holt said.

CBS2/KCAL9 is a proud media sponsor of the event.
