Play As You Pay: Calif. Lottery To Sell Tickets At Gas Pumps

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — As the price of gas continues to rise, there are numbers at the pump that could make you money, if you're lucky.

The California Lottery announced Tuesday that they're going to try a new program allowing customers to buy lotto tickets at gas pumps.

"I think this is going to be, hopefully, revolutionary for us," said Russ Lopez, of the California Lottery. "Seventy-three percent of customers who pump gas don't walk into the retail store, so this is one way of getting their business while they're pumping gas."

The "Play at the Pump" program is slated to launch in September at up to 150 gas stations in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

To play, customers need to swipe a valid driver's license and debit or credit card.

The Lotto numbers will appear on the customer's receipt with their fuel purchase. Players can also have their numbers texted to them.

"I think if it was that easy to just plug it in really quickly with your purchase I think I might try it," customer Jody Nathan-Chugg said.
