The ordinance based on similar ones enacted in Santa Monica and Calabasas prohibits smoking at the Pier Plaza, along The Strand bicycle path, in outdoor dining areas, public parks, and even parking lots.
While smoking along the beach was outlawed back in 2006, public reaction to the new law has been mixed, with some nonsmokers appealing to fairness for both sides.
"I think smokers should have a place to go, just not in my backyard," said one man.
Another resident argued that the ban seeks to protect more people than just those in the affected areas.
"So many parking lots are close to eating establishments and places where you don't want to necessarily deal with smoking, so I think that's fine," he said.
Smokers who light up in prohibited areas could face fines ranging from $100 up to $500.
