Perry Scores Spectacular Goal From Knees In 5-2 Rout Of Islanders
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Corey Perry scored two goals and captain Ryan Getzlaf extended his point streak to 12 games in the Anaheim Ducks' 5-2 victory over the spiraling New York Islanders on Monday night.
Cam Fowler had his first career short-handed goal and added two assists. Saku Koivu scored his first goal in nearly two months in the Ducks' third consecutive win and the Islanders' 10th straight loss.
Perry scored a goal in his career-best sixth straight game late in the second period, and he added a power-play goal in the third to clinch the sixth 20-goal season of his career.
Andrew Cogliano also scored, and Jonas Hiller made 35 saves for Anaheim.
John Tavares and Thomas Vanek scored for the Islanders, who also have lost 10 consecutive road games since Nov. 1.
Anders Nilsson stopped 26 shots for New York, but the Ducks overcame two early deficits with another dominant performance. Anaheim improved to 11-0-2 at Honda Center, still the only NHL team without a regulation home loss this season.
Getzlaf has the NHL's longest active point streak, officially at 12 games after earning an assist. He has scored in each of his last 14 appearances, but missed three games early in that stretch with an injury.
Fowler and Perry put the Ducks ahead with spectacular goals in the final 33 seconds of the second period. Fowler converted on a 3-on-1, short-handed rush before Perry scored his 19th goal of the season from his knees with 1.7 seconds left after getting tripped in the slot.
Fowler had his first three-point game of the season, and Perry pulled even with St. Louis' Alexander Steen and Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the league's longest goal streaks this season.
At 0-8-2 since Nov. 16, New York is on its longest skid since dropping a club-record 14 straight in 2010. The Islanders also have been outscored 43-16 on their longest road losing streak since the 1998-99 season.
The Ducks returned home on a high after consecutive victories in St. Louis and Chicago, cementing their status as a contender after four straight games against the Western Conference's best. After just one day off, the Ducks started slowly against the Islanders before their electric second-period effort.
Tavares put the Islanders ahead with his 12th goal during a power play midway through the first period, but Koivu evened it with a backhand goal on a rebound several minutes later. The Finnish center hadn't scored since Oct. 10, missing 15 games during that stretch with an apparent concussion.
Vanek scored with a quick shot off a faceoff early in the second period, but Cogliano evened it again with an easy goal off an exceptional assist by Daniel Winnik, who threaded a no-look backward pass through three Islanders.
