Skateboarder Struck By Vehicle, Killed While Crossing Street In Downey

DOWNEY (CBSLA.com) — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Friday in Downey.

According to the Downey Police Department, officers were sent just after 2 a.m. to the 8100 block of Firestone Boulevard for report of a vehicle versus a pedestrian.

Upon their arrival, authorities located a 20-year-old man, who resided in Downey, suffering from injuries sustained in the crash.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the Downey Fire Department.

The Coroner's office has identified the victim as Mitchell Albert Duran, of Downey.

A SigAlert has been issued for both sides of Firestone Boulevard between Myrtle and Lorena until further notice.

Officials said they hope to reopen the are by 7 a.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was struck by a 2013 Honda Accord as he carried a skateboard and tried to cross Firestone Boulevard.

The driver of the vehicle, a 36-year-old Downey man, is being interviewed by detectives.

At this time, it remains unclear if he was under the influence at the time of the crash or has committed a crime.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
