The accident "pushed the engine back into the cabin compartment which pinned the passenger into the car," Officer Garry Ross said.
The impact caused the car to burst into flames. A man in his 30s riding in the front seat was killed, CHP officials said. A female driver was seriously injured and a teen-aged girl riding in the back seat was partially ejected. She had to be airlifted to a local hospital. The girl is listed in critical condition, officials said.
Four other children were also in the car at the time of the accident. Officials say their injuries range from serious to moderate.
