A roughly 1.5-mile section was closed between Palisades Drive and Camino Capistrano in both directions on Thursday after a small slide occurred, sheriff's Lt. Lloyd Downing said.

"There was a slight mudslide, just enough to be dangerous for cars to get across," he said.

Dana Point's director of public works, Brad Fowler, said the hillside showed signs of instability, and there was a danger of a larger slide.

City officials are working with the property owner to stabilize the slope, and the work could take about a week to complete.
